Virobloc Safety Lock The Virobloc lock is a typical feature of Opinel knives. Joseph Opinel's son, Marcel Opinel, wanted to improve the safety of the knives. In 1955, he invented the Virobloc system. Initially, this meant that the blade could be locked in an open position. In the 1990s, the Virobloc system received its latest update. The blades can now also be locked in the closed position. Opinel Care and Use While your Opinel is open, hold the blade under warm water and clean it with detergent and a sponge. Rinse the blade with warm water, taking care not to get the wooden handle wet. Do not close your Opinel until the blade section is dry. (The no-wet condition does not apply to plastic handles.) Caution: Do not completely submerge your knife in water, as the wooden handle may be damaged. Cleaning in the Dishwasher Caution! To prevent permanent damage, pocket knives (folding knives) should not be washed in the dishwasher. Kitchen and table knives (fixed blades) are dishwasher safe. Hand washing is recommended to preserve the quality of your OPINEL knives. If you prefer to wash them in the dishwasher, we recommend using powder detergent rather than multi-purpose tablets. Removing the knives from the dishwasher immediately after washing is much healthier for the product's lifespan.About Opinel Opinel knives are renowned for their quality and simplicity.
